Dominating the awards was an act by a troupe of pinball machine players.

Of course, the pinball machines they played emitted musical notes.

The sequence of notes sometimes followed each player’s moves, and sometimes, when a musical jackpot was scored, a flourish of staccato trombones merged with low tone violins.

These performances were always a sellout. 

The critics however, considered this the music of drunken imbecilic pedagogues. But the critics were not in the popularity business.
